Originally from Ohio, Alison Monsour earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social and Global Studies at Antioch College. As a Bonner Scholar and Community Responsibility Scholar, Ms. Monsour provided countless hours of community service as a mentor and tutor at a school for children with severe behavior disorders. She also created and managed an afterschool Arts program for K-8 students. Upon graduation, Ms. Monsour was recognized with a statewide award for leadership in community service, the Ohio Campus Compact Charles J. Ping Award. During her tenure at Antioch College, Ms. Monsour also completed five full time cooperative education work experiences. She served as a community organizer in Oakland, California and an editor at a human rights organization in London, England. She taught fourth grade Math and Science in Dayton, Ohio and taught leadership and communication skills to teens near Asheville, North Carolina. She also taught Social Studies at a high school here in New Orleans, and it was then that she fell in love with the city, pledging to return for good when the time was right. After graduating from college, Ms. Monsour worked as a treatment specialist for adolescents in residential treatment in Portland, Oregon. She later moved to Chicago, Illinois to attend graduate school at DePaul University. She earned her Master of Education degree in Counseling, completing both the Community Counseling (mental health) and the School Counseling programs. In Chicago, Ms. Monsour completed a year-long mental health counseling internship at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School and served for two years as a School Counselor at Saint Scholastica Academy. She then spent a year in Baltimore, Maryland as a Counselor for the federal vocational training program Job Corps, and another year as a School Counselor at Citrus High School in Inverness, Florida. Grateful for all these wonderful learning experiences, Ms. Monsour is excited to finally return to New Orleans, a city that has always felt like home, to finally put down roots as she works to build a new school, a new life and a renewed New Orleans.
